DearManning，—IsupposeyouhaveheardofSophiaLloydsgoodfortune，andpaidthecustomaryplimentstotheparents.Heavenkeepthenew-borninfantfromstar-blastingandmoon-blasting，fromepilepsy，marasmus，andthedevil!Mayhelivetoseemanydays，andtheygoodones;somefriends，andtheyprettyregularcorrespondents，withasmuchwitaswisdomaswilleattheirbreadandcheesetogetherunderapoorroofwithoutquarrelling;asmuchgoodnessaswillearnheaven!HereImustleaveoff，mybenedictorypowersfailingme.Icouldcursethesheetfull;somuchstrongeriscorruptionthangraceintheNaturalMan.

Andnow，whenshallIcatchaglimpseofyourhonestface-to-facecountenanceagain—yourfinedogmaticalscepticalface，bypunch-light?O!oneglimpseofthehumanface，andshakeofthehumanhand，isbetterthanwholereamsofthiscold，thincorrespondence—yea，ofmoreworththanallthelettersthathavesweatedthefingersofsensibilityfromMadameSévignéandBalzac（observemyLarning!）toSterneandShenstone.

ColeridgeissettledwithhiswifeandtheyoungphilosopheratKeswickwiththeWordsworths.Theyhavecontrivedtospawnanewvolumeoflyricalballads，whichistoseethelightinaboutamonth，andcausesnolittleexcitementintheliteraryworld.GeorgeDyertoo，thatgood-naturedheathen，ismorethanninemonthsgonewithhistwinvolumesofode，pastoral，sonnet，elegy，Spenserian，Horatian，Akensidish，andMasonicverse—Clioprosperthebirth!itwillbetwelveshillingsoutofsomebodyspocket.Ifindhemeanstoexclude"personalsatire，"soitappearsbyhistrulyoriginaladvertisement.Well，GodputitintotheheartsoftheEnglishgentrytoeinshoalsandsubscribetohispoems，forHeneverputakinderheartintofleshofmanthanGeorgeDyers!

Southeysreminiscence，thoughinteresting，isveryconfusing.LambdoesnotseemtohavevisitedCambridgebetweentheendof1799andJanuary5，1800.AtthelatterdatetheLloydswereinthenorth.PossiblySoutheyreferstoanearlierillnessofMrs.Lloyd，which，writingafteralonginterval，heconfusedwithconfinement.
